Graduate Research Panel
Four Texas State graduate students gave power point presentations on Tuesday in room 201 in Old Main. The presentations were part of their grad work assignments, and lasted about 15 minutes each.
The four students were Cooper Cherry, Jamie Kilpatrick, Chris Troutman, and Justin Udomah.
Each did a piece focusing on a different area pertaining to mass media.
The first, by Cherry, involved net war and conflict between nation states. Mainly focusing on informing the public that our government is watching and monitoring a lot of what we do and say.
Second was Kilpatrick, her speech was over stereotyping in the funny pages. It mainly focused on women being commonly exploited as household workers, while men were off at work.
Next was Troutman, his research was to see if any benefits actually existed when marketing a product and incorporating music along with the advertisement. (i.e. ipod commercials) He found that people have attitudes toward certain products already, and that adding music to an advertisement doesn't necessarily boost perceptions.
Last was Udomah, he went into detail about how the mass media has a responsibility to report the news. This means all news, even in other countries. He felt that if America would have shown coverage of the Rwandan genocide, something might have been done to save thousands of lives.
"These guys did a great job researching, and that came through in their presentations," said audience member Seth Monty.
Sophomore Jason Neff said, "It's sad to hear about the genocide, I didn't really ever know that was going on."
Jamie Kilpatrick explained,"...it's easy once you find something you love." That seemed to be the trend with each student. Their work was thoroughly researched, and well written.
