General Motors Promotions and Marketing

Former University of Texas student, Dawn Robinette, spoke about General Motors events, sponsorships, and marketing at Texas State’s Mass Communication Week.

Robinette explained the structure of General Motors and how each division handles their own promotions and marketing. General Motors hired IPG, an ad holding company, which created R Works, an agency dedicated specifically to General Motors.

General Motors has many brands such as Chevrolet, Hummer, Cadillac, GM Goodwrench, and OnStar. All brands have their own staff and agencies.

Robinette explained the many opportunities in the marketing and public relations field and within the General Motors Company. “There are numerous opportunities out there, it is amazing how much the industry has changed in the past ten years,” said Robinette.

General Motors uses special events, sponsorships, and staged activities to market the companies many brands. Sponsorships include Chevy Thunder, an event for NASCAR enthusiast, and other music festivals. Staged events, such as a Pontiac test drive, occur at a sponsored event like the State Fair in Dallas, Texas.

Many students were interested what kind of a background someone might have to work in these departments for a major company such as General Motors. Robinette said although she has had more experience from previous employers, many employees are recent college graduates.

“This lecture has given me insight that public relations is the right direction for me, this is the kind of stuff I want to be involved with,” said public relation senior, Kelly Weafer.

“I though it was great to hear about someone who loves there job and has so much fun doing it. It makes me excited to find a job I can love just as much,” said Michelle Martin, public relation senior.
