Online Video: Where is it and where is it heading?

On Wednesday during Mass Comm Week Burnie Burns came to speak about the history of online video, his history with online video, and how to start a career in it.

Burns jumpstarted his career when he did an Apple Switch parody ad. But that was only the beginning. Burns went on to get a job at
Drunkgamers.com, which is a site dedicated to drinking and playing videogames.

He was known there as the XBOX guy. Burns worked only on things related to Halo and that is where he got his inspiration. “This kind of looks like a movie,” said Burns.

Enter in Red vs. Blue. In the style of animation known as machinima, Halo videogame characters are used to act out scripts which are then made into a weekly online series.

Burns went on to talk about the important part Adobe Flash had to play in the history of online video.

“Adobe Flash is probably the single biggest influence to online video,” says Burns. “They couldn’t have made youtube without the invention of flash.”

Burns believes that both television and film are heading to the same place, online.

Burns then went into imparting some of his career wisdom onto the audience. He gave the audience six key points to following the dream of online video.

Choose a path, build a brand, have your own site, consistency, know your tech and finally learn to promote.

“I liked what he had to say. I felt like he gave some good advice,” said electronic media senior Nick Kukowski.

“Very informative, everything from history to what is to come,” said senior Chance Ramsey.
